PPSA Lien Searches

PPSA Overview

The Personal Property Security Registration system is a notice filing system that records and reproduces information concerning consumer and business loans where goods and other personal property (such as vehicles, furniture, equipment, etc) are used as collateral to secure the loans. The borrower (debtor) and a bank or lender (creditor/secured party) enter into a security agreement where a ‘security interest a.k.a. lien’ is registered against personal property (goods or vehicles) in order to secure the loan.

Notices of security interests, also known as liens on personal property (goods), are registered in the PPSA system by completing and submitting an electronic document called a financing statement. The details of these registrations can be obtained by searching an individual name, business name, or motor vehicle VIN number.

What does PPSA stand for?

PPSA stands for the Personal Property Security Act.

What is PPSA search?

A PPSA search will reveal if a debtor (individual or business) has used their personal property as security for the repayment of a debt to a creditor. Basically, the personal assets are used as collateral to obtain a loan. The details of which are typically set out in a security agreement, which becomes effective against other interests once it’s registered in the PPSA registry system, which ‘perfects’ the security.

What is a Certified PPSA search report?

In Ontario, a certified report is a paper report printed by the PPSA office. Each page contains a stamp indicating that the results are ‘Certified by the Registrar of Personal Property Security.’ These reports are only available the next business day after order.

In other Provinces, the electronic reports generated from the Personal Property Registry system are considered certified.

What is an Electronic PPSA search report?

These reports are generated electronically in PDF from the PPSA system and emailed within 30 minutes to an hour. Caution, if a high volume of registrations is found the report will automatically become ‘certified’ and available the next business day.

What is CSRA?

These registrations are under the Corporation Securities Registrations Act which covers registrations prior to October 10th, 1989. These must be ordered over the counter and are paper copies of the original registration.
